Grub Control

Grub Control: Preventing Serious Lawn Damage Before It Starts

Grubs are one of the most destructive lawn pests in our region of Ohio. Grubs are the larval stage of beetles, and when they hatch in your lawn, they begin feeding on grass roots often leading to anything from irregular brown patches to complete loss of turf in affected areas.

Signs of Grub Damage

Grub damage often appears suddenly, but the warning signs develop below the surface first:

  • Dead patches in the lawn: Irregular brown or yellow areas appear, often in late summer or early fall, even on well-irrigated lawns.
  • Turf lifting easily: Grass may peel back like a carpet with little or no root system attached
  • Spongy texture: A soft or spongy feel when walking across the lawn can indicate early root damage from feeding grubs

Why Timing Matters

Ziehler Lawn Care applies preventative grub control at the start of the warm seasons when adult beetles are emerging from the soil and beginning to lay eggs.

Those eggs typically hatch within about two weeks under warm, favorable conditions. By late summer and early fall, the grubs are at their most active stage feeding aggressively on roots and causing the most noticeable damage.

As temperatures drop, grubs move deeper into the soil to overwinter before restarting the cycle in spring.

Prevention vs. Repair

Once grub damage is visible, the lawn has often already suffered significant root loss. At that point, recovery may require reseeding, soil repair, and additional lawn care treatments.

In most cases, repair is far more costly and time-consuming than prevention. Addressing the issue before damage occurs is the most efficient and effective way to protect your lawn.
